Murray Ayson was born in Balclutha, South Otago and lives at East Taieri, near Dunedin. As a self taught artist his work is not influenced by others, but only by the feel of the landscape itself and the light and shadow it portrays. He has spent a lifetime on the land, farming. Murray's great love of the outdoors and the natural beauty of the New Zealand countryside has taken him on numerous trips into many untouched areas of Fiordland and the Catlins, South Otago. In addition he has visited and painted the popular and more accessible places of New Zealand's South Island bush, lakes, coastline and Central Otago.

Murray's style reflects the mood of the bush, lakes and mountains, and his paintings present a perspective on a landscape that is simultaneously familiar and unexpected, serene and powerful. Murray develops his paintings from the photographs he takes on his trips into the untravelled back country of the South Island. Recently he has been exploring by helicopter, discovering and capturing New Zealand landscapes inaccessible by road.
