PAUL DEACON - Marine Artist © All Original works are copyright of the Artists
Paul Deacon was born in the south Devon port of Dartmouth, England, in 1953. His interest in marine paintings was fired by the sight of some of the first 'Tall Ship' races from his home town where the beautiful river Dart played host to so many of the world's large sailing vessels. In the early sixties his family moved to the west coast of Ireland for several years before returning to Dartmouth in 1972. On his return Paul joined the Merchant Navy. As an ordinary sailor he progressed quickly to the mate's position on vessels trading around all of Northern Europe and on the west coast of Africa. This grounding in a seafarer's life was a bonus in his being able to depict a wide variety of vessels in their relative surroundings and under all sorts of weather conditions along with an acute eye for correct detail. In his spare time between family commitments Paul has sailed on a number of unusual craft ranging from the humble Tamar barge 'Shramrock' to a modern Barquentine out of New Zealand. In 1990 he sailed as a mate and official marine Artist on board a replica Liverpool pilot Schooner with disadvantaged youngsters.
In 1989 Paul held his first major exhibition at Plymouth's Theatre Royal. This led to his works becoming widely sought after in the West of England. Galleries in the United States, France and Ireland now stock a selection of Paul's oil and watercolour paintings. Paul receives commissions covering the whole spectrum of seagoing craft ranging from warships, yachts trawlers' sail training vessels and merchant ships including general seascapes. H
e works in oil and watercolour as well as producing highly detailed pen and ink drawings. The international magazines Classic Boat, Windjammer, Norske Veritas and Australian Artist have published articles on Paul's work. Over the recent years Paul has had many solo and duel exhibitions in England. His work is now established in New Zealand with several successful exhibitions to date.
